It is such an important element in all music and a significant contributor to many mainstream artists, not to be confused with Christian or Christian rock music.
Many popular musician's roots can be trace back to Gospel Music. Little Richard. Sam Cooke, The Jacksons, Whitney Houston, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, James Brown even Elvis and many of today's Soul, R&B and Hip Hop artists.
The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace.
"Gospel music is coming to the mainstream," says gospel diva Yolanda Adams. "Singers are coming out of the church and introducing the gospel style to a mainstream audience."
I would like to set this thread apart by asking you to say a bit about the musicians you post, their influence on gospel or how gospel influenced them. Videos are optional and should be complimentary to the discussion of the artist you've selected to post about and not just random (there are other gospel threads for that). I would like this to be informative as well as musically entertaining.

For the purpose of separating the intro to the posting this post is a back to back post.
MAHALIA JACKSON
Born in 1911, Mahalia Jackson became one of the most influential gospel singers in the world and is the first Queen of Gospel Music. She recorded about 35 albums (mostly for Columbia Records) during her career, and her 45 rpm records included a dozen "golds"—million-sellers.
In 1997 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Many Blues and Rythm and Blues musicians recognize her as their greatest influence. Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and the Jacksons. Little Richard has cited Jackson as an inspiration, calling her “the true queen of spiritual singers.”
In Jackson’s own words, “Rock and roll was stolen out of the sanctified church!”
