A once popular Latin pop group in the 60's (similar to Herb Alpert and the TJB) had a hit in the early 80's, but you would never know it was them because it sounded like Air Supply
I suspect you're thinking of Alpert's old A&M labelmate, Sergio Mendes---he had a 1980s hit with "Never Gonna Let You Go" and yes, it does sound way closer to Air Supply than to the old Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66---and, come to think of it, they sounded rather the way you'd imagine Air Supply to have sounded if they played elevator music with South American overtones . . .
they figured Herb got a hit with Rise so Sergio had to get a hit too!!
