EDIT: I can guarantee they didn't have a clue about the meaning of the song and thought it was a hymn/spiritual. Back then, when this was on the radio, my family and everyone I knew would ask, "What the heck is a toke?!" We did not have any notion of the drug connection. Living in the Bible Belt region of South-Central Illinois, we were off the map when it came to knowledge about drug jargon. I recall when "Readers Digest" printed an article about slang to help teachers and parents to educate them about words/slang related to drugs and usage. Someone in the comments claimed Lawrence Welk knew, but there is no way that the man did! They had to alter some lyrics occasionally when they were possibly risque or controversial. This always has been a squeaky-clean show, not just family-oriented but aimed at the older generation. I recall when The Lennon Sisters stopped being on the show because of their makeup and style of dress.
