I remember the first time I heard this. I wasn't sure what to make of it. lol I think they were just trying to do something different. One thing you will notice though is a riff that is used in a similar fashion in Metal. The da-da-da-da-da....da-da. I've heard Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth and others use it.
Pretty cool isn't it? Pete was doing this back in the 60's. Was he the inspiration? It's our guess.

Boris the spider was actually a song written by John Entwistle long before he joined The Who (or any band for that matter).

He wrote it in his bedroom as a teenager watching a spider on his bedroom wall.

Notice it's written to emphasize the bass riff.

Here is another one of MANY examples. That is very-very similar if you listen closely.

More Pete history for ya. The world famous Townshend "windmill" was actually a misinterpretation of what Keith Richards was doing as Pete watched. Keith while playing needed to stretch his arm. He wound up and spun his arm in a long full sweeping motion. Pete saw him do this and thought it was unique enough for him to try to copy. Pete started doing the "windmill" as much as he saw fit. This created that signature guitar sound and looked cool live on stage. It wasn't until some time had passed, while talking to Keith, that he confessed stealing his unique guitar technique. Keith gave Pete a funny look and didn't remember even doing it! lol It wasn't a technique, he really was just stretching his arm. lol It was a "one" time thing. Pete created something totally unique and HE was the one who was famous for it.
