Default Hip Us to Someone Obscure..

Obscure is a relative term of course. Just don't link something from The Rolling Stones or Guns 'n Roses.

I'm a pretty big jazz fan, and a big fan of great singers. One that doesn't get the play of say a Holiday or Fitzgerald but I believe is in that league is Nancy Wilson. A great timbre, a great way around a lyric, and sexy as hell..

Never could have called his name, but I like that song, Visvaldis..

How 'bout Kenny Rankin? Met him once in an L.A. bar, he told me he was going to do an album of the standards. To my embarrassment and regret I told him I didn't think it was a good idea, that he should do what he does, that though he was a great singer, that kind of singing was a different kind of thing. I still believe that, by the way. I've heard some great singers of other genres sound ridiculous when attempting the standards. Even Paul McCartney just doesn't seem to get it. And even though i still prefer Kenny doing Kenny, on some tracks he really pulled it off..

On this one, a repeat from the nancy wilson link, I think he sounds great. The rap against Kenny was that he paid no attention to the lyrics, that he was more of an instrument than a singer...

Now dig this, from his Silver Morning album..

Kenny, think of you often, we lost you way too young. RIP, brother..

I can get real obscure, I like supporting musicians who probably aren't rich, so don't say you haven't been warned.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCiW3PkEeww - I thought of doing Anne Azema instead, but "early music revival" is maybe also getting too far out of mainstream tastes. However I may later if there's interest.
