Awhile back I discovered, somewhat by accident, that some of Wilson Pickett's famous songs were actually covers. Not to discredit the man as in many cases his rendition boosted a song to much greater popularity/height than it had before. (Singing covers was once quite respectable, much of both Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday's work is covers)
