I like their debut album from 1969. A little different from their 70's stuff. There is a song called "Move Over" that shows how they could Rock Hard when they wanted to.
Bread is my favorite group of all time! Having grown up in the 70's, their songs are like the anthems of my childhood. And I can't listen to "Diary" without tears welling up in my eyes to this very day...
I don't think that they get the appreciation that they deserve often enough, so thanks for the thread!!!
I may have suggested this in another thread a while ago. I am not sure. But, Guitar Man by Bread would be an excellent cover for Wilco. I can hear Tweedy singing it so well, and Nels Cline going to town on his guitar.
Isn't David Gates the only surviving member of Bread? Aren't all the rest of them dead?
Rob Royer is still alive and kicking, along with Gates.
Mike Botts and James Griffin both died of cancer several years ago. Larry Knechtel died of an undiagnosed heart ailment two years ago. Knechtel, by the way had a lot of musical background behind him. He had joined a band in the 50's along with guitarist Duane Eddy that called themselves The Rebels. Knechtel could play all instruments effortlessly and in fact was a long time member of the "Wrecking Crew", a group of session musicians who played the backup instruments on a variety of 50's and 60's rock/pop artists; from Sonny and Cher to Bobby Vee to Gary Lewis and the Playboys to dozens of other artists/groups. Other members of the crew were drummers Hal Blaine and Jim Gordon, Bassman Joe Osborne, Sax man Nino Tempo, and there were many, many others.
Larry Knechtel rocked! Literally. To think this same guy played the piano on "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and Rockin Pneumonia and the boogey woogey blues! and sooooooo much more.
