Are we now supposed to put a dime in the kitty everytime we sing Happy Birthday to somebody?
Moderator cut: yup, it's copyright protected

If we copyright the song ourselves I guess we can post our own work???
I AINT GOT NO TALENT by Kev K!
I ain't got no talent
And I can't sing no song
When I try to harmonize
The stuff comes out all wrong
Went to American Idol
I ain't a goin to Hollywood
Simon said I sucked
Randy said I ain't no good
When I was a young one
Used to sing in church
Preacher heard my voice
Threw me out head first.
Wait for the single for the rest of it!

Well Kev, the Happy Birthday song is in the public domain so you are safe with that one. And didn't you get the memo, I'm not having anymore birthdays

Actually, the Happy Birthday song is copyright protected. That's why you won't hear it sung at restaurants.

Next time the crowd at a Cubs' game sings "Take Me Out To the Ballgame," let's cart them all off to jail.

Karaoke must be just HORRIBLE then...since the player pays ONCE for the lyrics, and can have many different singers perform the same song.
And just think...when all these different singers perform, not ONE of them get paid to do so!
No more singing in the church choir, I suppose. And if you see the next John Lee Hooker playing his old guitar and singing on the corner, you better throw some coin in the hat!

Followup: I have recently learned that the two co-writers of this song had never attended a ball game and did not do so until decades later.

If this is City-Data.com's rule, it doesn't matter what the copyright law says. Follow this website's rule when on this website. Done.
On other websites, in the absence of any such rules, the posting of song lyrics usually does not diminish the sales of the song in question, which is a factor in copyright infringement. The artist won't lose any sales because of lyrics posted online; in fact it probably boosts sales.

The funny thing is that they have no problem with us LINKING people to the actual performance of the song on sites like YouTube...even though there's NO guarantee that the artists got paid for that use either.
