How is posting the lyrics for an entire song a copyright infringement? The song is already public information and posting it on this forum is not making any of us a profit from those lyrics.

Would it be acceptable to make a video of me singing the song? It all seems so crazy.

The one new thread today asking to post our own poems or lyrics, I was going to post my ex-wifes song she wrote for Wisbone Ash which she continues to get royalties from after all these years. Now if I posted this would it be any different if I was still married to her being that I/we own publishing rights and did give permission to post it?

What if she posted it? How would anyone know that she indeed has all rights to the lyrics and wishes to post it for all of us to read? Would she need to send the legal docs to the CD staff with her picture ID?

My current wife was a groupie with Mister Mister the 80s rock band. One song which got airplay was about her and even says her name in the lyrics body. I wonder if I would be in violation for posting that song and making reference to her. She gives me permission.

Fine line huh?

I guess it all has something to do with the sue happy world we live in today.

Do tell more. In that case, the lyrics still belong to Mister Mister and not your wife, even though she is referenced.

You guess correctly. More to come on this subject later.

I'm sorry but song lyrics are not going to be accepted here. We've no means to check which are and which aren't the mythical "public domain". 99% of them are copyrighted anyway. The fact that you can hear them (if you buy the CD) does not mean that you have the right to publish them any more than you are allowed to distribute the CD.

Whether it sounds ridiculous or not, I can't judge. It is the law. Nothing we can do about it.
