With Woodstock it just showed how the 60's was an incredible cultural turn after those 'dull' fifties. It was like everybody blew open all that staid convention in US society. Music as we saw changed irrevocably.

And it 's fascinating to me that if Woodstock was what it was with the artists who did go what could have happened if arguably the greatest rock bands and individuals of the time went namely the Beatles, Stones, Zep etc.

The fifties were not dull if you listened to jazz and read beat poetry!

August 16th 1969 introduced a new band to the crowd. What was to soon become one of Rocks all time favorite signature guitar tones. It was HeAvY.......not watered down. Leslie's tone was fatter than anyone else's at that time, even Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page. That Gibson Les Paul Jr. with Leslie's large bear mitts and sausage fingers just mashing down on the fretboard with brute force had a lot to do with it. He has power in his style and sound. Stevie Ray Vaughan bent strings like that too. It was trademark.

I was there! .... and yes it was that good. Best memory: waking up to the Jefferson Airplane finally getting to their set as dawn broke, amazing, then a walk over to the Hog Farm where they were giving out granola.

That's the best version of Volunteers IMO.

I have a thing for Grace Slick as well as Ann Wilson on a personal level as well.

I'd marry both in a heartbeat.
