That was one of my first too.

For me, all of my early CDs were upgrades, if they can be referred to as such, of stuff I already had. On day one of my CD age I bought:

Moody Blues / A Question Of Balance
Mody Blues / To Our Children's Children's Children
Moody Blues / In Search Of The Lost Chord
Moody Blues / Every Good Boy Deserves Favour

I was too poor to buy a CD player when they first came out, although I can vividly remember listening to the radio while driving at night and the DJ was talking about the Dire Strait's Brother in Arms CD and then playing Money for Nothing.

I finally bought one about 5 years after they'd been out. It was a 2nd hand unit off of a guy in college who was upgrading. Went out that week and bought Led Zeppelin I and The Cure's Staring at the Sea. A few days later I bought Jane's Addiction's Nothing Shocking.

Ahhh way back. I remember my first as being the Spin Doctor's: Pocket Full of Kryptonite, back in 1991. It was a few days before my 9th birthday and I had already gotten some cash from an aunt. Went down to the store, waited outside for them to open, and grabbed the first copy ever from that store. I felt like the man.

It was when I was about 10 years old. I don't remember which one was first, but my first 2 were "Severe Tire Damage" by They Might Be Giants and "Astro Lounge" by Smash Mouth (which is still among the better CDs I have). I think that was in 1999.

.
Dire, I don't know for sure, but the Brother in Arms CD might have been my first, too.
I know we did not get a CD player when they first appeared, it took a couple years.

I can't remember what my first CD was, but I know CD players were very expensive when they first appeared on the market sometime around the mid 1980's, I remember they were going for about $300! I didn't get my first CD player until 1990 and I bought it used from a pawn shop for $100, then I went to a record store and bought some CDs.

It's just like any other technology when it first appears on the market, it's not cheap, but as time goes on and it becomes more mainstream, it gets cheaper. I know I bought my first DVD player in 1999 and I paid a little over $300 for it. Now you can get the improved Progressive Scan DVD technology for about $50, while Blu-Ray and HD DVD are going for as much as $1000. I don't see any sense of spending that much for a Blu-Ray DVD player, then 4 years down the road find out that I could get the same, but improved technology for 1/10th of what I originally paid for it.
