There has been several threads where I've made brief comments on these guys. Good to see a thread just on this group.
The first lp is no doubt their best (La La Means I Love You) That song went top 5 in my area around January '68. My favorite song is the follow up hit (I'm Sorry) and Break Your promise came out later that summer. Love that lp! But their other releases have something to offer as well. They might have peaked with "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time" which came out 2 years later. All those lp's were on Philly Groove, a small but great label.
From the standpoint of the collecting hobby, all their recordings are collectible, particularly to overseas European collectors. What was released in the UK were released by Bell Records (their first 3 lp's anyway, not sure after that). Something else of note would be a contribution by Major Harris, who joined the band in 1973 and released a solo lp (Atlantic SD-11819) titled "My Way." Also released 1 45 each on the Moon Shot and Cameo labels that are collectible as well.
They had a lot of great hits when I was in high school. Too many songs to even list but eventually will show up on the thread. I think my favorite song was Daddy's Home. It reminded me of something we'd heard in the mid 50's even though it was recorded in the late 60's. Really a great song. Brings back a lot of nice memories.
In the late '90s, the group played a significant musical role in Quentin Tarantino's film Jackie Brown. Tarantino, a borderline obsessive fan of '70s pop culture, used "La La Means I Love You," and their best single, "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)," as a way of underscoring the relationship between actors Pam Grier and Robert Forster. In the film, Forster's character is so struck by the music (and Grier), he goes out and buys the Delfonics greatest hits. I'm a borderline obessive fan of Tarantino movies.
