Prior to Michael Jackson's release of Billie Jean and performance of it on Motown 25th Anniversary special, MTV did not allow black performers in their regular rotation (only spotty). Jackson broke that barrier and was introduced into regular rotation on the channel.
In 1968 Dennis Wilson, of the Beach Boys was driving through Malibu when he noticed two female hitchhikers. He picked them up and dropped them off at their destination. Later on Wilson noticed the same two girls hitchhiking again. This time he took them to his home. Wilson then went to a recording session. When he returned at around 3 a.m., he was met in his driveway by a stranger, Charles Manson. When he walked into his home, there were about a dozen people occupying the premises, most of them female. Wilson became fascinated by Manson and his followers; the "Manson Family" lived with Wilson for a period of time afterwards at his expense.
Initially impressed by Manson's songwriting talent, Wilson introduced him to a few friends in the music business. Recording sessions for Manson were held at Brian Wilson's home studio. Those recordings, if they exist, have never been released. The Beach Boys released a Manson song, originally titled "Cease To Exist" but reworked as "Never Learn Not To Love," as a single B-side and on the album 20/20.
Covers a number of pop culture and political aspects. Explaining this song to Q magazine in 1992, lead singer Michael Stipe said: "The words come from everywhere. I'm extremely aware of everything around me, whether I am in a sleeping state, awake, dream-state or just in day to day life. There's a part in 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It' that came from a dream where I was at Lester Bangs' birthday party and I was the only person there whose initials weren't L.B. So there was Lenny Bruce, Leonid Brezhnev, Leonard Bernstein... So that ended up in the song along with a lot of stuff I'd seen when I was flipping TV channels. It's a collection of streams of consciousness."

So Long Frank Lloyd Wright - Simon and Garfunkel - YouTube - It's actually not, precisely, about Frank Lloyd Wright. I considered "Mrs. Robinson" which was originally intended to about, and I think remained somewhat about, Eleanor Roosevelt. (The song Mrs. Robinson discusses "going to the candidates debates" and other things the character "Mrs. Robinson" is not shown doing. Once I saw "The Graduate" it was also clear to me the song was almost certainly not meant to be about Mrs. Robinson, I may do "Robinson" later.)
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vidda by Iron Butterfly 17 minutes recorded on first take, wasn't intended to be the song on the album. The recording that is heard on the album was meant to be a soundcheck for engineer Don Casale while the band waited for the arrival of producer Jim Hilton. However, Casale had rolled a recording tape, and when the rehearsal was completed it was agreed that the performance was of sufficient quality that another take was not needed. At a little over seventeen minutes, it occupies the entire second side of the In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida album. The lyrics are simple, and heard only at the beginning and the end.
The track was recorded on May 27, 1968. The song is considered significant in rock history because, together with music by Blue Cheer, Jimi Hendrix and Steppenwolf, it marks the time period when psychedelic music began to form heavy metal.
Midnight Special is a 1962 album by Jamaican-American singer, Harry Belafonte. The album notably contains the very first official recording of Bob Dylan, who plays harmonica on the title track. It is a traditional folk song thought to have originated among prisoners in the American South.
On October 18, 1974, Mary Woodson White, a girlfriend of Green's, assaulted him before committing suicide at his Memphis home. Although she was already married, White reportedly became upset when Green refused to marry her some four months after he peaked at #32 on the Hot 100 with the ironically titled "Let's Get Married". Green cited the incident as a wake-up call to change his life. He became an ordained pastor of the Full Gospol Tabernacle in Memphis in 1976 and continues to serve in this capacity, delivering services down the street from Graceland.
