Oh, I loved that movie, young Nicholas Cage! My favorite song from that movie is I Melt With You:

Not that there's much difference between 1979 and 1980. Or 1980 and 1981, if you prefer to look at the decade structured that way.

That being said ... I love this song. Dunno if you'd consider this New Wave or not, but ... enjoy either way.

Yes, that is definitely a New Wave song. This group was ahead of its time.

The real 80s new wave was somewhat underground at the time, college-radio and club based (in the US coasts at least). Actually it started in the late 70s but was mostly dead in spirit by about 1987.

The real spirit of new wave was applying reggae, ska, showtunes, dance, 60s lounge (heck, pretty much any style) in a post-punk oft-synthy environment. It was trying very hard to be modern, new and different (including dress, image and stagecraft), and IMO it was the most truly creative era in pop music history.
You have convinced me to keep the thread open.
To me new wave has always been about cleaned up punk, as thrifty says, and that it was dead by 1982.

Yeah , by the time the record industry got wind of what was happening in small venues, it was practically over . When the police became popular actually alternative rock was happening in small venues . people like 10,000 maniacs.
