SUsanna Hoffs was definitely influenced by the Mulholland Canyon scene. The Bangles have actually made some new material over the past 5 years which of course was ignored by most media outlets. One of the exceptions was WDIY Allentown/Bethlehem which featured both recent Bangles albums in rotation. Hoffs also made two covers albums with Mathew Sweet. One was a 60's album and the other one was a 70's cover album. The Peterson sisters indeed made some country rock music. One if not both were with Peter Holsapple in an Americana type band called the Continental Drifters.

The Smithereens are still making music today. Their latest album is called Smithereens 2011. It is also played often on WDIY - Lehigh Valley Community Public Radio - Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton PA, USA. They made an album earlier which may upset those who hate the Beatles, as I believe it was a Beatles cover album of sorts. They recently played in Bethlehem to a sold out crowd at the Steel Stacks Casino venue. I think the band is now going to continue making music on their own label.

Peter Buck is the Rickenbacker King! The appeal of REM initially was a unique Byrds type sound. Peter Buck while never interested in playing macho guitar solos was a huge Byrds-Kinks fan and he was known for an arpeggio playing style. He has a whole bunch of Rickenbacker guitars.
