Steely Dan is my favorite band, and they're often described as a jazz rock band. So, my question is, what are the good jazz rock/jazz fusion bands and newer bands of that sub-genre? Is it still a continued sub-genre? Or am I gonna have to learn to play the saxophone and start my own band?

The Japanese band Tokyo Jihen have done some good material in a jazz/rock vein, somewhat along Steely Dan line, but their output is uneven, and most of what they have put out since reuniting has been awful, in my opinion. And I would say their first two albums easily remain their best. I liked this from the mini-album they put out when they broke out:

At their best, Tokyo Jihen is probably my favorite rock band from the last fifteen or twenty years, but they are too often not at their best.

There are other people doing sophistipop with some jazzy flourishes, which I think of as being somewhat related to Steely Dan's sound:

I don't tend to think of Steely Dan as fusion per se, for what it's worth. There are tons of purely instrumental fusion bands around (including many around the globe that add ethnic elements of various sorts), but it's not a style I particularly like, so I have nothing to recommend.

And just for the heck of it, here is some jazz-rock fusion (arguably closer to space rock) that I like more than most, by a band that's not terribly well know, Mars Everywhere. It takes almost three minutes before the melody starts to build up, after the mildly noisy intro:

Never made it to CD or streaming digital (although there are mp3 rips floating around).

(This is just a fan video, not an original put together by the band, if that isn't obvious.)

Some great music came from these four--Check out Billy Cobham's lp--Spectrum. A lot of great guitar on that lp by Tommy Bolin.

Weather Report--Mysterious Traveler! 8:15--12:15--concert recording----great stuff!
