That makes sense now. That other group, Walk Off the Earth, is so talented but I really didn't know they didn't do the song.
ANd thanks for the "real" video...I'll check it out...I feel silly for not realizing who the real artist is...and now I'm going to have to check out his other music. Thanks!
I love this song. I randomly ran across it flipping through the radio stations and now its in constant airplay on my Ipod. I keep meaning to look for other songs but I never have time.
I believe Gotye is a band, and the song Someone I used to Know is probably the best pop song in 35 years!
Just to point something out, as to why this song is so popular. It sounds just like Baa, Baa, Black Sheep, the English nursery rhyme, (same tune, some of it), one of the first songs that were sung to you, probably.
Great to play on the subconscious, to sell records, isn’t it?

While you may have a point in that some of the tune sounds like Baa Baa Black Sheep, I think that your statement here implies that this is the selling point of the song and I don't think that you are right. I think the reason that this song is so popular is the display of raw emotion in the chorus and the universality of the emotion he conveys. We've all felt that way at some stage..."Why did you have to act like that and treat me like I mean nothing to you?". If you've ever felt that way you know that this song is coming from a very real place and does not need to rely on tricks to sell it. Gotye's body of work shows the depth of his talent and creativity and I feel you have given too simplistic an evaluation and implied something slightly nefarious in your assumption that he is just 'play[ing] on the subconscious to sell records'.
He's been famous in Australia for quite a few years.
Yes, let's not forget that other countries have their own stars that don't necessarily crossover everywhere else (or anywhere else). Many of the British bands I was listening to heavily in the first half of the 80s didn't have U.S. hits until the late 80s/early 90s (at which point their best work was usually behind them). Case in point:
(My "Spellbound" dance was better than Siouxsie's though.)
