Is it me, or are different music genre more popular in different parts of the country? I have noticed that Rock/Top 40 is not as popular in the NYC/NJ area as it once was and currently is in the urban South. In the urban South, Rock/Pop is popular along with country; in the rural areas country music is all you will hear. Now country, is something that is almost NEVER heard in NYC and to a lesser extent NJ.

Oh course, much of this is cultural. Pop/Rock has a largely white audience. Rap/Hip Hop is largely popular among African-Americans. But there are too many exceptions to the rules to label the issue that simply. For example, white people in West Virginia has a completely different taste to music than those in Boston.

Therefore, what other differences (other than what I wrote in the first paragraph) has anyone else observed in terms of popularity of different music genre in different parts of the country? Are any statistics available? What explains the differences?

Probably not a while lot anymore, as music has been disseminated through radio, the internet.etc. Rap of course, once confined to the ghettos, is now popular all over America. I think it's more a generational rather than a regional thing.
