I find the topic of most songs (like pop, rock, or even country) revolves around love, sex, or something along those lines. I seems like 90% or even more of new songs you hear is about same subject, possibly rehashed a bit.
Honestly, I often find it hard to relate since majority of life is not about sex or love! Instead I spend time going to work, university, talking to my family, hanging out with friends, playing video games, thinking about my future, traveling etc. I swear I haven't heard any song on radio in last few years about either of these subjects.
Some of best I like is Eye of Tiger (by Survivor) or I See Boat on the River (by Boney M). These songs actually inspire about living my life and looking at my dreams.
Anyhow, back main question of why don't most songs topic do something different instead of same old love/sex theme?
i would rather hear a beautiful song about love. love is universal. people love other people. you love your family, and friends, and you have a new love in your live so you still down and you write a song about that. i like music like that.
now, i don't like music about rough sex and all that, but if it's done in a way that makes it a beautiful thing between a man, and a woman, then i'm all for it.
The following song involves a man lusting after a married woman at church, sleeping with her, and then getting killed. Lines include "Get up from there your naked man And put you on some clothes." It dates from the seventeenth century.
Still it does seem like at one time people just indicated characters had sex in a song, they didn't feel the need in getting explicit about the sex act itself. Puns and animal euphemisms being sufficient. (Granted some of those puns could be fairly explicit. The folk song "Bonny Black Hare" I believe has a woman tell a hunter "if you want to see a black hare/hair look under my dress" or some such)
Anyway there are plenty of songs not about sex so far as I know. I'm pretty sure the following song is not about sex or romance unless it's so deeply coded it lost me.

Because love is the most moving emotion. Makes sense.
I agree that it would be fun to hear more songs about other things.
But there are!
There are songs about dancing.
There are songs about cars.
There's that song about how this guy is dying and he does all this stuff in his dying days...that's inspirational: Tim McGraw Live like you were dying
