It was the year rock´n´roll had it´s breakthrough.
I like the music from the late 60s better but the best year for rock'n'roll had to be around 1956 because that's when it started. That's when music changed drastically and broke away from the boring old style of earlier days. The rock beat. It caused a frenzy and all of a sudden a lot of new stars popped up (see above.) Rock around the Clock was one of the first rock songs.

Donovan's '69 album is good...his last really good album
Joni's '69 album Clouds is ok...has "Chelsea Morning" (strangely not on her first album,
gave it to Fairport Convention, who put it out in '68 as a single)
I like her Ladies of the Canyon and Blue albums more.

By 1969 Moby Grape had lost their leader Skip Spence...a few good songs like "It's a Beautiful Day Today", also the bizarre song "Seeing" also known as Skip's Song. Weird, but I like it.

I just browsed through my old records albums (yes, I kept them ~ still play them once in a while), and here are some from '69, although some were probably recorded then with the songs released in '70.

Leon Russell: self-titled (no date on it anywhere but it has to be real close)
Blue Cheer: "Outsideinside"
Spencer Davis Group: "I'm a Man"
The Doors: "Morrison Hotel"
The Doors: "Soft Parade" (no date on it anywhere but I'm guessing it's real close)
Joe Cocker: self-entitled
Ten Wheel Drive w/Genya Ravan: "Brief Replies" (anyone remember this band? Spectacular album!)

All the songs on that chart are great. What a great time to be of age!

If I was of age in 69 I would just represent totally. Sticking it to Nixon and the Young Republicans!

I was just thinking of this this morning. I was thinking how good the music was in the early 70s (71-74) and why. It was a couple years after music ventured out of set parameters, it became more unconventional (less dance music, less pop) and more experimental, less romantic themes. A lot of bands produced their best work Zep, Floyd and progressive rock bands (Genesis, Yes, ELP, Tull, etc) were at their peaks. It seems around 1975 music became more "commercial".

Of course, this could be my perception. I was born in 1961 so naturally, the early 70s is when I was transitioning to teen years and becoming more interested in the outside culture and music of the times.

No, I was born in 1981 and you're spot on.

Recently I spun the Almost Famous soundtrack which mostly covers those years. Wisely, it's mostly songs that were popular, and yet don't continually get blared at football games these days. Man, that music just sounds so FRESH to me.
