The Bar-Kays were a prolific group, but sadly doesn't get a lot of airplay these days. They released a few dozen singles during nearly a two decade run, first on the Volt label (late 60's), then on Mercury, during pretty much the disco era and the remainder of the 1980's. Their signature song, to me anyway, is "Soul Finger", which IIRC is their first chart single AND chart hit. Went top 5 in the Summer of '67.
"Soul Finger" is one of those rock instrumentals that's burned into my brain. In the days of AM top-40 radio, the stations would cut to a short network news report at the top of the hour, so if they had a minute or so to kill waiting for the newscast, they'd stretch with instrumentals like "Green Onions," "Grazing In The Grass" or "Soul Finger."
I think the Bar-Kays broke ground in the genre of soul / funk bands who were instrumentalist as well as vocalist. Before them it was always a back up band who played behind the singers.
