Any fans of The Darkness on here? I must admit I own both CDs, both are really good. The songs they released (ie I Believe In a Thing Called Love, etc) are decent, but its their other songs that are superior IMO.
I didn't care much for Hair & Lipstick metal the first time it came around. I'm even less enthusiastic about the prospect of its revival.
While they definitely do sorta come across as that kind of band, thats not really what theyre all about. I hear more Queen and Steppenwolf, maybe some Dio, in their songs than anything else, there is definitely no Slaughter or Poison influence. Have you heard their whole CDs? Fans of 70s rock would probably enjoy it, especially their CD "Permission to Land". Their newer CD "One Way Ticket to Hell and Back" is good too, but a little more experimental, a little less hard-rock than their first release.
There's beauty in the solace of not giving a damn.

To me they don't quite have the hard edge that the serious 70s rock bands had. They have about the same edge as the 80s bands but the quality of the arrangements is defintely more creative -- it's like AC/DC meets Slim Whitman. But where they really smack of the 80s hair & lipstick metal bands is the look. Any of their videos, publicity photos, etc., would have been right at home in the 80s. And I don't think that's an accident; they seem to be actively cultivating the 80s retro image and playing on the "camp" value.

Your just about spot on there. Having seen Justin Hawkins [lead vocal] admit it in interviews on more than one occasion. Admitting himself that they set out with definate `Spinal Tap` tendencies. If anyone likes the music that`s fine, I don`t dislike it myself, but after listening to Justin I think he would have a wry smile whenever he thought people were taking the band too seriously..

Thats why I asked if youve heard the whole CD, there is most definitely some hard-edged songs like Black Shuck or Get Your Hands Off Of My Woman. Their first CD was definitely hard edged, minus the released songs, like I stated earlier.
Also, they didnt wear lipstick or eyeliner. Justin was known for his David Lee Roth/Freddie Mercury jumpsuits and headbands. In no way did they ever look like old Motley Crue or Tuff or Enuff Z Nuff. Maybe they dressed up a bit for some photo shoots or something, but on stage it was pure rock n roll.
