. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
When all the laughter dies in sorrow
And the tears have risen to a flood
When all the wars have found a cause
In human wisdom and in blood
Do you think they'll cry in sadness
Do you think the eye will blink
Do you think they'll curse the madness
Do you even think they'll think
When all the great galactic systems
Sigh to a frozen halt in space
Do you think there will be some remnant
Of beauty of the human race
Do you think there will be a vestige
Or a sniffle or a cosmic tear
Do you think a greater thinking thing
Will give a damn that man was here
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Can anyone interpret some of the lyrics on "Close to the Edge" by Yes?
A seasoned witch could call you from the depths of your disgrace,
And rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace,
And achieve it all with music that came quickly from afar,
Then taste the fruit of man recorded losing all against the hour.
And assessing points to nowhere, leading ev'ry single one.
A dewdrop can exalt us like the music of the sun,
And take away the plain in which we move,
And choose the course you're running.
Down at the edge, round by the corner,
Not right away, not right away.
Close to the edge, down by a river,
Not right away, not right away.
Crossed the line around the changes of the summer,
Reaching out to call the color of the sky.
Passed around a moment clothed in mornings faster than we see.
Getting over all the time I had to worry,
Leaving all the changes far from far behind.
We relieve the tension only to find out the master's name.
Down at the end, round by the corner.
Close to the edge, just by a river.
Seasons will pass you by.
I get up, I get down.
Now that it's all over and done,
Now that you find, now that you're whole.
II. Total Mass Retain
(Anderson/Squire)
My eyes convinced, eclipsed with the younger moon attained with love.
It changed as almost strained amidst clear manna from above.
I crucified my hate and held the word within my hand.
There's you, the time, the logic, or the reasons we don't understand.
Sad courage claimed the victims standing still for all to see,
As armoured movers took approached to overlook the sea.
There since the cord, the license, or the reasons we understood will be.
Down at the edge, close by a river.
Close to the edge, round by the corner.
Close to the end, down by the corner.
Down at the edge, round by the river.
Sudden problems shouldn't take away the startled memory.
All in all, the journey takes you all the way.
As apart from any reality that you've ever seen and known.
Guessing problems only to deceive the mention,
Passing paths that climb halfway into the void.
As we cross from side to side, we hear the total mass retain.
You can always find me here
Raisin’ hell and drinking beer
With all my good-time buddies
Cutting up and having fun
Yeah the jokes can be on me
And I don’t mind usually
I’m an easy-going back-slapping son of a gun
But she just left me
And that’s just left me undone
So you don’t want to push your luck boys, not tonight
Just don’t bring up her name one more time
If you think I’m in the mood to pick a fight
You’re damn right
She’s gone and I admit
I was wrong but I can’t quit
Thinking about how good our love used to be
And the whiskey numbs the pain
But in the morning when I wake
I’ll be hungover hanging on to a memory
And I’ll order one more round
Lose the Coke and keep the Crown
And just drown my misery
And I’ll blind myself with liquor and neon lights
Alone and stoned out of my mind
If you think I’m flying high as a kite
You’re damn right
Now I’m just trying to make it through
But getting over you is a long, long road
And I’m a strong man,
But it’s killing me letting go
And I’d love to say it ain’t, but I can’t lie
And pretend I got something in my eyes
If you think I’m gonna break down and cry
You’re damn right
You’re damn right
Every time I hear James sings this song, I just want to put my arms around him.
once upon a time you dressed so fine
you threw the bums a dime in your prime
didn't you?
people'd call say beware doll you're bound to fall
you thought they were all
kidding you
you used to
laugh about
everybody that was
hanging out
now you don't talk so loud
now you don't seem so proud
about having to be scrounging
your next meal
how does it feel?
Everyday in the week I'm in a different city.
In my stay too long people try to pull me down.
They talk about me like a dog, talkin' about the clothes I wear.
But they don't realize they're the ones who's square.
Hey, and that's why.
You can't hold me down.
I don't want to be down.
I gotta move on.
Stone free, do what I please.
Stone free, to ride the breeze.
Stone free, I can't stay.
I got to, got to, got to get away.
Listen to this, baby.
A woman here, a woman there try to keep me in a plastic cage.
But they don't realize it's so easy to break.
Oh, but sometimes I get hot, feel my heart kind a runnin' hot.
That's when I got to move before I get caught.
Hey, and that's why, listen to me, baby.
You can't hold me down.
I don't want to be tied down.
I gotta be free.
If I could save time in a bottle, The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day
Till Eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you.
If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true,
I'd save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, I would spend them with you.
But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them.
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go
Through time with.
If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true,
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you.
But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them.
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go
Through time with.
I never got to spend the time I wanted with that special person. His parents didn't want him to marry an American girl, and he yielded to what they wanted. We were 19, and it was 1971. Most of us did what our parents wanted. This was "our song", and it's remained my favorite since then. It always makes me cry.
