Im a guitarist. A pretty bad one, too But, I live and breath guitars . . .
Anything with strings.

I don't believe there are any "best" guitarists. Really . . . It's what you like. Its all good.
I love Hendrix. But, I also love Joan Jett. Live, she totally kills it! A true rocker.
Is Jimmy Page "better" than Mick Taylor? Clapton?? I dunno, Im just glad all are on
record so I can queue up whatever Im in the mood for.
It's all good. Play and listen with open ears and mind

"Best" is/are the ones millions, even billions of people want to sound like. The ones that make people pick up a guitar for the first time and put the effort and time in to learn to play it. Once the guitar manufacturers feel as though you earned a name for yourself they offer you a deal to tear your most prized piece down piece by piece and duplicate it so other people can buy it. Those guitarists will remain in the spotlight forever and won't be forgotten. You know you "made it" when other guitarists can't stop thinking about "you" "them". They try like hell to sound like you, but that NEVER happens.

Consequently you have "two" guitars that are worth more than my life. The Declaration Of Independence or Constitution Of The United States Of America have the same "value".

Personally, I like Neil Young and Bob Mould a lot better, but that's just me.

Guitar Center bought "Lenny" for $623,500. That was just a '63 his wife bought him and was one of his back-ups.

What do you think SRV #1 is worth?

You'll have to ask his brother Jimmie about that one.

Eric was right...I NEVER have seen anything like that before on my life...not ever!
Jimi wrote Voodoo Child...Stevie just "played" it.

Jimi was amazing live, some of his stuff is still head scratching almost 50 years later!

Ultimately, when it comes to guitar playing, it's subjective.

Jimi had a fantastic "feeling for the guitar and music" that came across in his playing,
not just a jumble of impressive fast notes that mean nothing.
Since Jimi there are a lot of fast technical players that seem to play circles around
older generation of guitarist but are missing ingreditient X, feeling and emotion.

Personally, I put Jimi Hendrix on top.
I also like Blackmore, Page, Beck, Clapton, Rhoads, Gilmour, and EVH.
Big Townshend fan too, though he's not a solo guy, but an innovator in his own right.

Then, using this formula, I a would say Johnny Thunders was the "Best" guitarist. He was the Alpha-Center of two movements/genres . . . Punk and Hair Metal. Johnny Thunders, and to a lesser degree, Johnny Ramone were responsible for more people picking up guitars than any other guitar players in my unscientific and boorish opinion. In the late 70's, many, many kids in England and the USA started a band based on what those guys did with three chords. It was accessible to everyone.
Keef Richards is who inspired me to pick up guitar. Im sure he would be waaaaay up there, even above Hendrix in the "inspire" category.
I'm older. I was alive when Hendrix was. But, the gamut wheel has shifted radically. New, younger players dont know about Hendrix or even care that much. The players featured in guitar mag, I've never even heard of. Conversely, new players haven't heard much of a lot of players from that era.

Sounds like a serious personal issue that must be dealt with to me.
