I don't know what the appeal is. As far as I can tell, Soundgarden was not the best alternative & grunge band of the 90s. I don't even remember their songs being on the radio that much back then.
They fit the macho rock profile. It is safe rock with tattooed men working in the factory with 2 kids. Some are married. Some are divorced. When Soundgarden started out they were the first band to crossover to the alternative audience. I can verify that early SOundgarden was played on MTVs 120 minutes. There once was an outlandish proclamation by a critic who said they were the next Led Zeppelin. I also played early Soundgarden on the College radio. Then they wussed out and made garden variety rock for the Macho types. I checked out in 1994.
