The Byrds, no one mentioned them. McGuinns 12 string, Crosbys harmony, Gene Clarks lyrics. Hillman just for being Hillman. Later Parsons and White
CCR, what can you say. One of the best. I don't think Fogerty has ever come close to what he had with them as a solo artist, and for sure without him they sucked.
I saw some Crosby, Stills, Nash reunion concert or another on TV recently. Damn if the only one out of the three of them whose voice was still as sharp as it was 40 years ago was Crosby. He still has the voice of an angel, even with all the crap he's put himself through.

Crosby and Nash provided harmonies on Dave Gilmore`s last solo project `On An Island`.. I think that was a pretty good endorsement for them...
My vote goes to R.E.M.!!! I'm sure many could argue that choice, but they've been MY favorite band since the 80s - and I'm sticking with them, despite their lack of recent music.
Other ones I'd consider great are Nirvana, Metallica, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin (are they American?), and probably a bunch more I can't think of right now.
May be i am older than you but I always consider Fleetwood Mac as a Brtish Band. They probly got a start from John Mayalls Bluesbreakers. As a matter of fact i am quite sure they started as Fleetwood Mac Blues Band in the 60's
