So we all know the 90's were a great time for alternative musicians to be heard on the radio. Then things went back to crap.
But a lot of good music has been made since 2000, and is still being made. We're just not hearing it on the conglomerate radio stations. So, let's see some good music that's been made since the millennium.
Please, no Britney Spears, no Justin Bieber, no Taylor Swift, and for god's sake, no Nickleback.
So, to start, from the beginning of the millennium:
Actually hip-hop/rap dominated the top 40 charts in the 90s. Alternative basically came out in the 80s and was played on college radio stations. It then became more mainstream around 1988-89 (with R.E.M,etc) and by 1991 was intertwined with grunge. But the dominant music was hip-hop/rap. The dominanht fashion also reflected that. Especially on the Eastcoast. Not sure how old you are, or what area of the country you live in.
Although many late 90s sounding music carried over into the 2000's, The 2000's overall offered more variety in my opinion and gave more underground genres a chance to get the exposure over the internet that they were unable to get before.
Pop music stuff like Britney Spears, Justin Bieber were/are just "bubble gum/pop" that has always existed. The only thing that really changes is the names of these teen artists. The target demographic audience for this type of music is mostly young girls, and teens.
