We should have the two songs up for comparison. I'll have to go search.

Meh. If it hadn't topped the charts we wouldn't be having this convo.

That's the point. They made boatloads of money off of Marvin Gaye's song.

And yes it's totally a ripoff. It's almost a note for note copy with just the tempo increased and some percussion changes.

I don't get it. I always thought that the way the law works is that you can change a few notes and you're good. Listen to this production music https://www.freshmusic.com/royalty-free-music/cd/70s And this music https://www.freshmusic.com/royalty-free-music/cd/80s
One rip off after another. But this is supposed to be LEGAL!

No. Not a total rip-off. The lines are very blurred regarding this topic. (teehee)

Incidentally, did you see Nona Gaye (Marvin's daughter) speaking to the press? What a total drama queen!

Also, it's really hard to find a picture of her where's she's not totally showing off her chest area. Just sayin.

A jury certainly thought it was a ripoff. The Gaye estate was awarded 7.4 million dollars.

The beat is pretty much the same but if the Gaye estate won over that, many other songs would be in trouble!
