Seasons In The Abyss (SITB) of Slayer was ranked 8th best thrash album (with the top spot going to the same band -- Reign In Blood). I think SITB is one of the top 10 albums all time in ANY GENRE!
There are no fillers in this album, which is a requirement of mine to be a great album. And it's not enough that the songs are good enough to be not a filler, but they should be GREAT. Songs you'd love to hear over and over and over -- each one of them.
The main advantage of SITB over other thrash albums is it pushed speed and power to its limit WITHOUT losing MELODY. Yes, in order for songs to be great they must have melody.
I listen to quality music of any genre and this album is quality music at its finest.
Blood Red is the song that hooked me to Slayer. This has a jumpy melody and beat. It's definitely disco in thrash clothing.
It told me that Slayer cherishes melody and is not just about generic speed. And they have good leads as well alternated by their 2 lead guitarists, something absent in other bands.
Spirit In Black. While Blood In Red hooks you in the disco mood, the song Spirit In Black gets you up and dancing to thrash. Another sweet melody in the SITB album.
Expendable Youth. Slayer dials it down and provides a slow dance tune with Expendable Youth. By this time, I knew my money was so well spent on the album.
SITB goes full speed this time around with Hallowed Point. Still a great song. How can it not be? With a song whose lyrics start with "High velocity bullet at close range can damage the mind, shattering the skull, shredding the brain, severing the spine!"
Born of Fire. A personal fave of mine. Slayer goes full blast on speed with that lyrics from the POV of may I say it, Satan's son! Haha. It's all just for fun.
"All things dead must rise again when twilight blanket falls." Yeeeeehaawww!!
