The Beatles were before my time and I never bought into the genius reputation that my elders gave to them. Stuff from their contemporaries at Motown and Stax, CTI jazz and others hold much more interest to me. In Hip-Hop's early days they did a lot of sampling from the music of my generation
Definitely Beatles for me. their discography represents the span of one of the most creative eras of popular music: 1963-1970. They were the uncontested leader of this era, helping to direct the sound into new directions. The change in their sound is amazing, given how different they sounded year after year, yet always having that very recognizable Beatles sound to it. Here's a brief sample: from 1963, early '65, late'65 and 1966.
