I've been listening to an entire opera about the North - Benjamin Britten's Paul Bunyan! The lyrics are by W. H. Auden. It's uneven but the best sections (mostly near the beginning and end) are terrific.

Incidentally, it bugs me when people have these discussions of "northerners vs. southerners", and everybody always equates "the North" with Manhattan.

True. I guess that is because the North is more much diverse.
