I read an interview with him where he mentioned that he settled on SG's because when breaking guitars on stage, Rickenbackers shattered like light bulbs on the first hit, which was too quick; Fenders were almost indestructible and took too long and too much effort to break, dragging out the destructo act too long, but at least once you had broken about 6 of them, you could build 2 or 3 workable instruments out of the random pieces; SG's took just about the right amount of time and effort to break.
I saw The Who in spring of 1976 in Denver. It was the last American tour with Keith Moon.
My brother saw them on their first American tour, opening for Herman's Hermits along with The Blues Magoos.
