Yeah, McCartney played lead guitar as well as bass on "Taxman"
As per Geoff Emerick, engineer on the session, Harrison couldn't
nail down a good solo, so after an hour, he let McCartney try,
same solo was edited onto the fade out.
McCartney played a Epiphone Casino thru WEM Pep Rush fuzz pedal and his
1964 Fender Bassman amp.
McCartney played a number of guitar parts, some well documented
like lead on "Ticket to Ride", others not as well known.
Also being a drummer, he'd "show" Ringo drum patterns he wanted
on certain songs, like "Ticket to Ride".
It's McCartney playing drums on "Back in the USSR",
Ringo had temporarily quit and was hanging out with Peter Sellers
in Sardinia (where he wrote "Octopus's Garden")
Paul McCartney's musical talent is just ridiculous.
Not only can he pretty much play a variety of instruments, he can play them quite well.
I'm not saying that the drums on Back in the USSR is really that complicated but when your natural instrument is guitar and bass, it definitely speaks a lot for your musical ability to be able to jump over, lay down a drum track and then go right back to bass.
I do believe he played every single instrument on McCartney.
The Beatles first LP was released fifty years ago yesterday. The cover was shot by Angus McBean, a celebrated theatrical photographer of the time, known for his surrealist style.
They met him in reception at EMI's HQ in Manchester Square, he looked up at the stairwell and said "why don't you go up there and look over?"
They did. McBean lay on his back in reception and shot a few frames. Job done. An image was created in those brief moments that resounds down the years.
When EMI left Manchester Square it took the staircase with it and installed it in new offices in Hammersmith.
The cover of that record is the first thing The Beatles did that you could call "iconic".
Anyone know what group posed in the same place for the same picture?
I think I still know pretty much every Beatle lyric ever sung... I prefer the old stuff. A song that stands out for me is: If I Fell. I just like the melody and harmonies.
"If I Fell" is one of my favorite Beatles songs although I tend to prefer the 1965-1966 standpoint as being my favorite Beatles time period. As you said, the melody and harmonies stand out.
I wait for the day that the Beatles music is on Spotify.
And I wait for the day around here (US) that we get a national holiday for what all those guys did for us. As Lennon said when they first came here we were 'all walkin' around in f****** bermuda shorts with Boston crew cuts and stuff on our teeth!......;-)... Some changes came pretty fast when they got here!
