Elvis and the Blue Moon Boys was a band, silly.
Bill Black and Scotty Moore was his back up band on Sun Records.
In later years his band was called the TCB band.
Oh! How embarrassing...
Never heard that before. Thanks for the education.

I'd also say Chicago is far more deserving than half the bands on the list.
Definitely the Grateful Dead. They are the most iconic, longest-lived American rock band. As for the comment that they "lacked songwriting," wtf?!? They had two guys who solely wrote lyrics, (but were considered de facto band members) as well as a larger catalogue of original songs than all the other bands listed!
If "lacked" was meant in the sense of lacked musical/lyrical quality, I'd also have to strongly disagree on that point. (Refer to the music and lyrical content of Terrapin Station and St. Stephen for a couple examples.) I realize that most people on C-D don't really like the Dead, though, and probably have little more than superficial knowledge about their music.
I saw this poll the other day and voted for Aerosmith, only because that was my "anthem" music during my teenage years and just beyond. I still love their older stuff, which brings me to something else I've often considered: I think most bands/artists peak early and never quite live up to that youthful rush of creativity. Just a personal observation.

Yes, most bands are lucky to string together 5 solid albums. Many cannot.
Of all of these bands being discussed it was remarkable how many of them had a really nice 5-6 album run, and then just petered out.
Chicago is one of the biggest U.S. groups of all time. Would like to see Steely Dan on the list as well as the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsies. And SRV&DoubleTrouble.

Jimi Hendrix Experience was 2/3 British. I agree they're a great band, but I'm not sure they would qualify.
