Let's say someone from the early 1900s went through a time machine to the year 2016 and could only stay a few hours. In addition to showing the time traveler the modern wonders (cars, computers/internet, air conditioning, etc) you have a chance to play 5 songs.

What songs would you play? You can list some back-up choices as I did.

I would play several different types of music...

1. Moonlight Serenade (1939) or In The Mood (1940) by Glenn Miller. A taste of the Big Band era.

2. (We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock (1954) by Bill Haley and Comets. Second choice would be something by Elvis. Probably "Don't Be Cruel" from 1956. A sample of rock 'n' roll.

3. Moon River (1961) by Henry Mancini or Theme From a Summer Place (1960) by Percy Faith and his Orchestra. Old-style standard. Another choice would be "Moonglow and Theme From 'Picnic'" (1956) by Morris Stoloff.

4. Lyin' Eyes (1975) by The Eagles. For a taste of easy listening.

5. El Paso (1960) by Marty Robbins. For a sample of county music.

I would not bother playing anything that would shock the traveler, like heavy metal or rap!

Heh-heh. Most of those are over 50 years old. You said they are traveling to 2016.

They probably would not understand or enjoy music past 1980 or 1990!

6 is okay. Doesn't have to be exactly 5!

You listed a wide variety, too.

The 70s and 80s had glam rock and punk. You think they'd enjoy those? The 1990s seemed more "sane" or "normal" in comparison.

There are so many 2000s/2010s artists that they could enjoy btw: Adele, Lana Del Rey, Michael Buble, Colbie Caillat, Jason Mraz...etc.

I would not pick anything like that, in addition to not picking heavy metal or rap. There were plenty of soft rock, country and easy listening 1970s music.

Okay, then what 5 songs would you play (from any year)? I purposelessly chose pre-1980 songs because I honestly think the time traveler would enjoy those more.

Satisfaction by the Stones, Riders on the Storm by the Doors, Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, Layla by Derek and the Dominos, and Closer to Home by Grand Funk Railroad.

I have heard all of those except possibly the last one.

It would be interesting to see the reaction of the person sent to the present.

That last one is a great one.

You may know it by its other name: "I'm Your Captain".
