Weak year, especially compared with previous polls.
Songs that passed my test were: Spooky, Young Girl, Magic Carpet Ride, Born To Be Wild(all be it pretentious), Light My Fire(great cover), Wichita Lineman, LA LA Means I Love You, People Got To be Free, and It's A Beautiful Morning, Words(Love early Bee Gees), Hello, Goodbye.
Hey Jude.....classic ...I also like the flipside ...John's rocker "Revolution" (Nicky Hopkins, keyboards).
Hello I love You ....The Doors ....yeah....though I prefer late 68 single, "Touch Me".
Steppenwolf (a Canadian band) came out of nowhere in 68 after changing their name from "Sparrow".
3 classic songs that year ...."Born to be Wild"...."Magic Carpet Ride" and "The Pusher"
.... 3 thumbs up!!
Fire ...Crazy World of Arthur Brown ....love it ....a friend of Pete Townshend, Arthur Brown was really out there....love that Hammond Organ!
Wichita Lineman ....super tune written by Jimmy Webb (he was on a roll in the late 60s,
he wrote "McArthur Park", "Up Up and Way" ....and many more.
Ace musician Glen Campbell does a nice solo on Fender 6 string bass!!
Mrs Robinson ...great S & G song....a short version (mostly instrumental) was
recorded for the movie "The Graduate" in 1967. The film ended up being a big hit.
S & G then went into the studio in 1968 to record a proper version for album (Book Ends),
and single.
