Been listening to some music from the 70's and 80's lately. One thing I noticed was how a lot of that music back then was very dance oriented. They don't seem to make songs today with the same energy and rhythm like they did back then. I mean back then they had songs(jams) that would make you go off. I think the better dance music stopped around the early 90's. What do you think?

Anyway here's an example of a good dance song from this 70's and 80's era:

Another thing I miss is Rappers who can dance. How often do you see Rappers dancing today??

Back then(80's to early 90's) you weren't cool unless you could dance

I really can't relate to this, since I've come around to liking some segments of electronic dance music from the past few years. I think for the music people mean when they say "dance music" now in the narrow sense, the DJ set is what creates peaks and valleys, more than the tracks as individual units. Maybe that's less true for crossover dance pop tracks, which might have a little more variation built into them. I would recommend paying attention to UK dance music, if you haven't been.

I was too young to be going to clubs in the 70s, and probably too weird in the 80s to be going to places spinning the best music for dancing. I was more likely to be a places that played bands like Joy Division back then. I did go through a heavy salsa dancing period between 2000-2003 especially. And now. . . it's not that I'm too old, per se, to be going out dancing, but I have health issues (not particularly age-related) that keep me from doing much of anything. The point is of all of that is to say that I haven't field-tested this new music (or most of the older music ou talk about) in clubs. So I am relating to "dance music" now mostly as a listener and not a dancer. Still, I think once you've spent some time dancing, it affects your experience of dance music (in both the narrow and broader sense) as a listener. I feel how I might move when I listen to dance music, even if I'm not actually moving.

Those two EDM songs remind me of the House/club music that was popular in the late 80's to early 90's. I thought House was alright. I like the dances people can do to it. I guess today's EDM is built on that early 90's House sound.

Techno ruined it for me. Same with House. Missed the Disco era (turned 21 in 1988).

It's OK...I did get the MOSH PIT!!

There's definitely a retro element in some of the recent dance music I like. I think it's especially heavy on the Rudimental track.

It's funny. I liked a tiny bit of house in the late 80s and early 90s, but mostly disliked house overall until I got into a current wave of UK garage and deep house (and UK funky which was kind of something new). I've always liked disco a lot more than house, but I'm not sure I feel that way any longer.

I'm very happy with recent gems like this (although not sure how dance-floor oriented this one really is):

This doesn't feel too far from disco to me (at times anyway), but it's still house. It may partly be the vocals. (Weird video, I know.)

Salsa at its best is still probably my favorite thing to dance to, but by the time I got around to taking lessons it was already past its peak as a music genre. Still, there have been good things here and there, even if they seem to get fewer and fewer.
