I wonder what the music industry would be like today, if bands like the following had never existed until debuting today (you can probably add 100 bands/acts to this list):

Led Zeppelin
The Rolling Stones
Aerosmith
Elvis Presley
Metallica
Jimi Hendrix

If bands like these (and others) weren't engrained in music history, I wonder if any other bands that are otherwise considered second rate would have risen to the top, been prominent, and the industry today would be different than what we know it. The groundbreaking and music changing bands of the past have had such an impact on the industry, that I wonder if they'd have the same impact if they just hit the scene now.

I am big on parallel universes, but these kind of music discussions bore me.

Jimi Hendrix would still blow every other guitar player off the map.

I did not say it was a bad song loose cannon but this is what the music industry looks for now a days. Justin Bieber types white, black, latino you name the culture.

The record companies are much less influential now than back in the day, so there's a good chance one or more of those groups you mentioned may have been lost out in if they had failed to get noticed in the digital age.

Imagine if Punk Rock had never happened.

You would still have the likes of Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and Yes, doing tours on ice, with gigantic keyboards, drums with hundreds of toms, triple and quadruple guitars, singing about extraterrestrial crap and all that nonsense.

I thank God daily for the New York Dolls, Velvet Underground, The Ramones, The Clash, etc.
