Atleast with country music, you can understand the words.
I'm not a big fan of country music, but I enjoy listening to some of the older tunes. Some country music is very thought provoking and emotional.
It seemed like in the past, country stars were made, not manufactured by the recording studio. I can't stand most of modern country.
I agree, countrys not country anymore. Its all about money and fame now. Some of you might remember the song by George Strait and Allan Jackson some years ago that caused a big uproar in the country music industry.
Please listen
There once was a time when country music was Honky Tonk, western, and pure southern country.
Now its pop, pop, pop music with a little country thrown in. Except for a few.
Heres my list.
True male country singers George Strait Allan Jackson Lonestar Mark Chesnutt (anyone remember him?)
Not country Rascal Flatts Big and Rich Emerson drive
True female country singers Loretta lynn Dolly Parton I cant think of a female singer today that has a true country feel to her music. Reba, somewhat.
Not country Martina mcBride Faith Hill Carrie Underwood These women are not country singers, they are pop singers like Celine dion. Gretchen Willson- A southern wannbe.
To those who know the true meaning of country music, please add to this list.
Thanks for the youtube video silver-charm. Very true too.
With youtube, I have access to so much music and I enjoy listening to some of the older tunes. The newer tunes can't hold a flame to the classic ones. I can't even listen to the country stations these days because most of the music is crap. This is coming from someone who is 30 years old too. I think the decline started in the early 1990's when country music became more mainstream.
I also grew up near the Carter Family's homestead and listened to some old tunes. What an enjoyable experience! Listening to old Carter recordings is like listening to a piece of history since country music had its start in southwest Virginia/northeast Tennessee.
Hello blueeyes, I too am in my thirties and enjoy the sound of bluegrass.
Here in Owensboro KY, we have the International Bluegrass Museum
The Carter family was inducted into the Hall of Honor in 2001.
Here is a link. International Bluegrass Music Museum
Bill Monroe is a Huge name in these parts.
As for country, I love the sound of Loretta lynn. Here is one of my favorite songs by her.

Blueeyes I know you said that you dont like Modern Country, but what do you think of my list?
Good list, especially Loretta Lynn...that's real country. So gritty yet beautiful. I also enjoy Dolly Parton and George Strait. Alan Jackson is good to listen too also. Also I've started listening to Alabama and think they are a good group too.
I guess I came across as a little harsh about modern country because of some of it is not bad. I just like the more traditonal sound and artists better.
The sentimentality just drives me crazy. Every time I hear another "country" song about flag-waving and how good it used to be "back then", I go a little crazier. Listen to the masters -- all wasn't well in Johnny Cash's America! Loretta Lynn didn't blindly love apple pie! It used to be country artists would sing about controversial topics, protesting the treatment of Native Americans, industrialization, and war-mongering. Now what do you hear? Some Canadian or Australian twanging their vowels over how much they love Jesus and their dog. Some of the best singers, including Dolly and Randy Travis, have Christian themes to their music, but it's always sincere and beautiful. This dreck makes the bile rise in my throat.
Keith Whitley -- When You Say Nothing at All. Right up there with Cure's "Lovesong" for greatest love song of all time. Allison Krause's version is more famous, but this is the original and brings a tear to the eye. RIP Keith.
Johnny Cash -- San Quentin. Kris Kristofferson said that Johnny was like the Northern star, you could sail your ship by him.
Loretta Lynn -- Fist City. Loretta Lynn is an OG -- Original Gangsta.
Marc Broussard -- Home. Now for something a lil' different, here's modern Cajun swamp rock.
I've been a fan of Loretta Lynn for 35 plus years. Talk about a gal who grew up in humble beginnings! She didn't mind rattling the C&W establishment a time or two. Another classic of hers that came out 6 or 7 years after Fist City came out was The Pill (no need to explain what that one is about!) I miss Cash- every time the San Quentin cd gets cranked up I.m already singin' "San Quentin I hate every inch of you"!
