I'm not sure I'll be able to give enough clues that anyone can help me here. But I've been looking through some of the threads and it looks like there are some real knowledgeable music fans around so here's my dilemma:
The other day I had the briefest of flashbacks of a bizarre MTV video that I probably only saw a couple of times. I believe that it was played in the late Eighties or early Nineties.
In it, IIRC, a single man sat on a chair on an empty stage. I'm not sure if he played an instrument or not but he was wearing some kind of a strange device on his head. I vaguely remember it as a type of eyeglasses but it may have only covered one eye. The lens looked sort of like a jeweler's loupe.
His face was expressionless and detached and the song he was singing was nearly more of a chant. It was rapid enough that I don't remember what it was about. I think he was listing things in popular culture - news items, perhaps.
It all seemed rather dark and cynical. Does that ring a bell with anyone? Now that I've thought of it I've been everywhere trying to find out who that was with no luck.

Maybe Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel? That was a weird one...
There was a similarity to the style of the Billy Joel song. Maybe there was electronic voice manipulation involved.
Now I'm wondering if it may have been a mock-up of some sort. A skit? A commercial? It's fairly bugging me and I thought for sure someone here might know.
Moth - "Achtung, Baby" - I think you've got it! That sure sounds familiar. Catchy little weird number.
I'll have to see if they did more than one video for it as the one in my memory had no one else on stage but him. But that's the beat and tone I remember.
woxyroxme, you'll have to take second prize for coming up with the video with the most images of eyeglasses in it. Good try.
Okay, I've got it. It was the version from the 1993 Video Music Awards that I am remembering. It's got a nice creepy beat and I think you can prophesy to it.
