1980 through 1982 were horrible years for mainstream hit music. The punk scene was in full swing with new wave bands that were coming out with some great records that were a few years away from being in the mainstream themselves in the US

Well I think those years were pretty good musically and much improved from the late 70s. Yes I listened to new wave and punk in the late 70s and early 80s, also hard rock, and metal, and progressive, and jazzrock, and arena rock, and what would be called alternative if we had thought of the term. Sure, all that music was and is great - but unless you bought albums or tapes, or borrowed them from a freind, or went to a concert, you never heard most all of it. Mainstream pop in the late 70s was a cesspool of disco, light rock, country rock, Billy Joel, and other mostly boring and banal stuff.
