Default your favorite songwriter?

I like songwriters who write songs that are easily adaptable to any music genre. Such as:
Kris Kristofferson-Sunday Mornin Comin Down or Me and Bobby McGee
Willie Nelson-Blue Eyes Cryin in the Rain or Crazy
Carole King-anything she ever wrote
Leon Russell-Superstar or Livin on Tulsa Time

How about you?

Michael Stipe. The master of cryptic, abstract, and opaque lyrics.

It's hard for me to put anyone ahead of Bob Dylan.

Anthony Kiedis. His songwriting is poetic.

Warren Zevon: poetic, dark, poignant, savage, funny.
So much more than Werewolves of London, though I do like that song.

Excitable Boy

Hasten Down the Wind

Poor Poor Pitiful Me

Desperados Under the Eaves

Splendid Isolation

Sentimental Hygiene

Keep Me In Your Heart

And many, many more.

I can see me getting slammed for it, but one of my favorites is Gordon Lightfoot. Virtually everything he wrote from about 1966 to 1976 is classic.

Agree with Carol King, though I only own a few of her albums

Stuart Murdoch from Belle & Sebastian
Gil Scott-Heron
Lou Reed
Mark E. Smith
