Todd Rundgren's "Dust in the Wind" came out first, I think. I always found it way more moving than the Kansas song.

I'd known Rundgren's song forever and never would have guessed at the time Guns N' Roses would be the perfect cover band for it.

Here's a "God Only Knows" by Jason Michael Carroll. Kinda straightforward country drama ballad. Then there's Brian Wilson's "God Only Knows."

Youth tends to conjure zero sum death match games with musicians, rendering the "serious" artists more worthy. If it was Beach Boys versus Velvet Underground, well...how could anyone call it a contest? But they're both soulful, and as a "teenage symphony to God" I actual find this song exemplifies a something that is more emotionally knowing, listening to it now in my later years. Here's the astonishing vocal track, isolated. (It's not loading via link. Just look up "God Only Knows vocal track" at your preferred video/music site.)
