So many have been mentioned, I don't want to be redundant. One I don't think has been listed is Eric Johnson with that "2-ton violin" tone. A lot of money has been spent by guitar enthusiasts the world over, trying to capture that sound. Here's his setup:

The great guitar players of the 60's and 70's took what the old blues players did to yet another level. Their work speaks for itself. The 70's was a time of not copying anyone. It was a time of really pushing to find your own sound and voice.
Musicians get very different things out of the same influences, which is how they forge their own style and become instantly recognizable from the pack.
