OK I made a mistake there, what I meant was the Beach Boys would be largely forgotten without Brian Wilson. If all they had were Mike Loves singing about cars they would have had some hits back in the early 60's (pre-Beatles) but would have faded real fast.
The songs mentioned of Mike Loves pale in comparison the BW's contributions, in my opinion.
The Beach Boys wasn´t pre-Beatles, they broke through about the same time.
Even if the Beach Boys would have split up in 1965 they would still have their place in the history of pop music with over a dozen top 20 songs between 1962 and 1965.
Mike Love was portrayed as a real jerk in the film "Love and Mercy" as well. I wondered if he were like that in real life. He certainly seemed like a very self centered man.

Great post.
It seems many music artists say Love's nothing but an A hole.
I saw "The Beach Boys" perform in DC on July 4th on PBS. Mike Love was the only original, but John Stamos performed on the drums as he has in the past.
OT: The "Four Tops" also performed, singing all their hits from the Motown days of the '60's that I grew up with. The problem with this is that every one of them were not even born during the heyday of these songs.
There would have been no Beach Boys without Mike Love, villain or not.
Exactly right.
I'd bet most saying otherwise were not even born when he was singing Fun, Fun, Fun. I'd also bet that no one here knows/knew any of The Beach Boys personally or knows anything about what went on behind the scenes with the group. What we do see is a lot of judgement coming from thin air.
Ha, I am old enough to remember I heard them before the Beatles. And I said nothing about Mike Love as a person. I just don't like his voice and find songs about cars not very memorable. Now if you are older even than me, and born in the 40s then yeah, maybe those car songs seem more important to you. And the arrival of the Beatles and Brian's inspiration from them, less so. But for me the opposite is true Dave

I saw the Beach Boys live in 1974, and 1975. They were fantastic. The first concert they played most of their traditional hits, and sounded great. The second time they played a mix of their popular songs, and some more aggressive, more experimental rock that I had not heard before, and it was also great. The band "America" opened for them at that concert, and blew everyone away by playing mostly hard, electric rock. They did do their hits too, and my opinion of them went up several notches as they also sounded great.

Maybe not, but Brian Wilson would still have written a lot of great songs, whereas Mike Love probably would have been an insurance salesman if it hadn't been for the Wilson family.
