What do you guys think of Michael Jackson in this category? I grew up listening to him and would say he was an awesome singer and performer. One of the greatest performers of all time. But I don't recall him ever playing any instruments. And I'm pretty sure he didn't single handedly write all of hits (compared to many other artists who write, produce, and play instruments on their songs).

Obviously just based on his "musical talents", not all that legal stuff that happened to him before he died.

I would say those famous composers had to have a great level of "genius" to write all those compositions. We're talking many instrument parts, sheet music, the length of the compositions, etc. More so than modern day artists (pop artists).

He is more of an entertainment genius, if you want to go there. His music was good, but it was the full package that made Michael Jackson the superstar he was....

Not hating on him, but I'd say he was not a genius on his "musical talents" alone.

^^And yeah, obviously Mozart, probably #1 on the list. I kinda thought we were talking modern music, but there should be no limits.

His mother taught him to play the piano when he was young, and he could play the keyboard, guitar and bongo drums, but not proficiently.

I think of him a child prodigy. I remember reading that his mother realized when he was a small child that he was gifted musically, and far more talented than any of her other children. However, I didn't know that he could not read music and he did not write it. As Mozart heard symphonies in his head, Jackson apparently heard entire songs in his head before he wrote them down.

“The lyrics, the strings, the chords, everything comes at the moment like a gift that is put right into your head and that’s how I hear it,” said Jackson during the ‘Dangerous’ court case of 1994.

According to Gene Simmons, he is not even an artist....

(Screw Gene Simmons, that was one of his stupidest comments ever, in a long list of stupid comments.)

For me modern musical genius is Mr.Tuomas Holopainen, song writer of Nightwish (Plays Piano / keyboard)
All don't like this genre but fact is that best of his songs turns even for symphony orchestra, so that may be one answer for question "What defines a musical genius".
Crown for songs is quality singer,Miss Floor Jansen.

The full answer is probably unknowable. Geniuses are people I think are so much greater than their peers that they makeup a different species.
Bob Dylan
Lou Reed
That does not necessarily mean that they are the greatest musicians ever. All it means is that their artistic genius combined with their consistent adherence to principles make them more advanced than everyone else.
Both Dylan and Reed are both credited with bringing a new kind of poetry to Rock n Roll.
