Weird Tastes in music, anyone?
Anyone else have weird tastes in music?
I was still in 4th grade when Elvis emerged on the national scene. When the Beatles played Ed Sullivan I was in high school. This is only to show that I have been a music fan since decades.
My tastes in music are very unusual compared to most people. I like all sorts of music which often makes others think I’m weird. For the last several years I have been recording from the radio. A cassette tape is always ready to record, I merely hit the pause button. My shelf contains 372 tapes (90 minutes each) full of music from the radio. I was wondering if anyone else has similar tastes.
For example, a tape may play music in this order:
Monkey Man - Rolling Stones
Bakersfield - Buck Owens
Roman Festivals - Ottorino Resphigi
Atmosphere - Joy Division
Blue Moon - Marvells
La Vie En Rose - Edith Piaf
Marlene - Marianne Rosenberg (German singer)
We Won’t Be Fooled Again - Who
La Mere - Claude DeBussey
The Secret Marines - Zoogz Rift
Coal Miner’s Daughter - Loretta Lynn
Ma Liberte - Geoges Moustaki
Funky Town - Sound Machine
4th Symphony - Tschaikovski
Piano - Thelonius Monk
Bela Lugosi is Dead - Bauhaus
Blue Danube Waltz - Johannes Strauss
Dancing Queen - ABBA
I Wanna Be Your Dog - Stooges
Muleskinner Blues - Fendermen
Mr Blue Sky - ELO
I’ve Never Been This Far Before - Conway Twitty
Puppets Apocalypse - Legendary Pink Dots
Mother Sky - Can
Piano Concerto - Franz Liszt
Louie, Louie - Kingsmen
Personality Crisis - New York Dolls
etc. etc. (Sorry about the long list, but it's much easier to provide examples than to try and explain my tastes)
For the last two years I’ve been recording from college stations online (WMBR.org; WNUR.org and KLAX).
Most people in my generation don’t appreciate any music made after 1980. I liked the punk era, new wave. Goth also appeals to me.
I just wonder if there are any others who have a diversified taste in music.

Much the same here Vis...At the last count [coming up 4 yrs ago] I had almost 14,000 albums in various "hard copy" formats [much prefered] and haven`t really much of a clue how many in MP3 , but there is a sizeable hard drive full of them and another started..
Everything from Bill Haley to The Zutons, and Arnold Bax to The Clash....

::raises hand::
I think I may qualify.
Funny, Visvaldis, I thought I was older than you--I enjoy your irreverent wit--but you have a few years on me. Born in '54, I think I was either a twinkle in my daddy's eye, or maybe an infant when Elvis first swayed his pelvis.
It's wonderful that you enjoy so many different genres, I do too. My kids and younger friends help me discover new and different stuff, and while I don't have and mp3 player, others do, so that helps me absorb more tunes.
Probably you are more faceted than I am; your mix list is so alluring that it may help me stretch further!
Here is a typical mix I might listen to when preparing and eating dinner:
Nightclubbing/Iggy Pop
Rapper's Delight/Sugarhill Gang
My Moon My Man/Feist
Gritty Shaker/David Holmes
Gold Lion/Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Clap Your Hands/the Meters
My My Metrocard/ Le Tigre
Disco Paradise/VHS or Beta
Caring Is Creepy/the Shins
Sugar On My Tongue/Talking Heads
Rebellion/Arcade Fire
Hallelujah/Jeff Buckley
House of Jealous Lovers/the Rapture
Little Cream Soda/White Stripes
Coma Girl/Joe Strummer
Annie/Ronnie Lane
O Valencia/the Decemberists
Powderfinger/Neil Young
Barber's Adagio for Strings/Leonard Bernstein
Prairie Wedding/Mark Knopfler
Attics of My Life/Grateful Dead
We're Going to Be Friends/White Stripes
Trouble In Mind/Jerry Lee Lewis w/Eric Clapton
Piazza, New York Catcher/Belle and Sebastian
Same Oul' Town/The Saw Doctors
Code Monkey/Jonathan Coulton
Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth/Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Hash Pipe/Weezer
Seven Spanish Angels/Ray Charles & Willie Nelson
Rain Street/the Pogues
Frank and Jesse James/Warren Zevon
Hip Hop Thighs/Ike Reilly Assassination
Aberdeen/Kenny Wayne Shepherd
Wolf Like Me/TV On the Radio
Black Friday Rule/Flogging Molly
WildCat/Ratatat
Egyptian Reggae/Jonathan Richman
Yeah Yeah Yeah Song/Flaming Lips
Natural Blues/Moby

Intriguing selections from BlueWillowPlate. Quite a few that are unknown to me. Maybe I'll check up on some of the songs, could be I'll discover something very appealing.
I guess you must spent much time preparing and eating a dinner. Do you sometimes get up to dance?

I second and third all your selections, but I'm even more weird:
I've been listening to every Bix Biederbecke song I can find. Amazing stuff.

Har dee har!
His life would make a great biopic. I was watching some show on Ovation about Jazz and they were interviewing the likes of Wynton Marsalis and Clint Eastwood (who is jazz afficianado) ... most everyone interviewed mentioned Biederbecke. It's what got me into looking into his work. I have a pandora profile set to him too so whenever I need a fix ...

Nelson Riddle Route 66 is so damn smooth!
Well, my musical weirdness took me in the direction of the girl groups of the 60s a couple of years back. I started buying anything I could find by the Crystals, Chiffons, Ronettes, Leslie Gore, Shirelles, Martha & The Vandellas, Shangri-Las, Dixie Cups, et al. I only knew most of them for a song or two, but - Wow! There's a ton of well written and nicely produced material there. Someone had to keep the Brill writers employed during the British invasion! None of them were known for their albums, only their singles. Still a lot fun. Oh, the heartbreak and angst!
