I guess they are considered more "art rock" or something but Wire is one of the best.

They looked glam sure; but if you listen, and especially watch their live shows on video you'll see punk through & through (with a little more talent in the writing is all)

My favorite punk band from that era is X. I also used to listen to T.S.O.L and the Dead Kennedys, The Stooges, Black Flag, The Clash, UK Subs.

I thought of the MC5 and the Stooges as early heavy metal-hard rock much like Blue Cheer. I'd compare the Stooges with Black Sabbath and the MC5 with AC-DC.

If Hanoi Rocks is punk then so is Mötley Crüe and Guns´n´Roses.
