In the 70s there were 5 really popular bands from the south that I just couldn't get enough of. The motivating factor in each of them was that they played great music and could really jam. Though I never saw any of these acts live, I harbored such a deep appreciation for their musicianship - even if it was only through their recordings.
They were:
The Allman Brothers
Charlie Daniels Band
Lynyrd Skynrd
Marshall Tucker Band
The Outlaws
There were others, like Wet Willie, Evlin Bishop, Black Oak Arkansas and , Molly Hatchet that I'm not as familiar with and maybe one of these would be your go-to band, but I guess I'm wondering...
Who, in your opinion was the best of these great bands? Or for the sake of conversation, who was your favorite?
I tend to lean toward The Allmans and Marshall Tucker and if hard pressed, would pick Marshall Tucker above all. I would like to know more about their stage presences if anyone can help me out.
I saw the Allman Brothers, Elvin Bishop and Black Oak Arkansas live. (Duane was gone by then. ) Loved the Allmans. Still do.
Elvin Bishop put on a smokin' hot show back in the day.
But for me, the Allmans rule. I could not get enough of Gregg's world-weary voice, nor Dicky's lead guitar.
Lynrd Skynrd made some fine music. To this day, they are very popular here in northern Florida, which is basically the South.
What about Tom Petty (Born a Rebel)? I enjoy his stuff.
If I had to pick an overall Southern favorite, it would be the Allman Brothers.
38 Special
Molly Hatchet
Lynyrd Skynrd
Doobie Brothers
Rossingtom Collins
When i used to live in Jacksonville my friend a DIEHARD Lynyrd Skynyrd fan took me to see Ronnie Van Zandt's grave in Orange Park. I asked him why there were unopened beer and unlit ''Joints'' on his Tomb and he said that people bring these for Ronnie. What a trip.....
