What bands or artists that could never top their debut album?
Whether its your personal opinion or chart position and sales figures.

Screaming Trees. Their Sweet Oblivion debut is hard to top, and not just by them but by 99% of the artists all time.

Edit: Found out from wiki it's not their first LOL

Because of the fiasco above, I'll say Pearl Jam's Ten.

Several such bands, though some got fairly close with one or more subsequent albums:

Boston
The Pretenders
The Romantics
Television
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Big Star
The Byrds
Crosby, Stills, and Nash
The Go-gos
Devo
Wire
New York Dolls
Tracy Chapman
Derek and the Dominos
Patti Smith
Sex Pistols
Modern Lovers
The B-52s
Violent Femmes
The Cars
Poucette Dart Band
Velvet Underground

For these, their first two albums were great but then they had a subsequent drop off:

Marshall Crenshaw
America

Part of that is due to the time/movement PJ was in. You can't do angst/youth/unfiltered after album #1...#2 tops.

They literally have at least 4 other albums that are better than many great bands' best album.

Some picks:

Pixies: Surfer Rosa
Smashing Pumpkins: Gish (I know this will be disputed)
Fugazi: Repeater
